Discussion Questions on Locke, ch. 1-4

The crucial chapters in the first reading assignment from The Second Treatise are chapters 2, 3, and 5, but I do not expect to get to chapter 5 in the first lecture and have thus included discussion questions only on chapters 1-4.

1. Locke's first characterization of the state of nature is mainly in sections 4 and 6. What are its main characteristics?

2. Sections 6 and 7 (and, later on, sections 16, 134, 135 and 183) characterize the fundamental law of nature. What is it? How do we come to know it?

3. How does Locke's state of nature differ from Hobbes'?
